How fast can an electric scooter go?

The electric scooter's speed depends on the motor power, battery, BMS (Battery Management System) etc.

Due to laws in many countries, the top speed of most electric scooters is limited to around 20–25 km/h (12–15 mph).

But they can be much faster. HWWH fastest escooter P4 can up to 100 KM/H.

What factors affect electric scooter speed?

  1. Motor power is the primary factor governing theoretical top speed and acceleration.
  2. Battery voltage ranks second, directly determining motor RPM.
  3. The BMS (Battery Management System) is third, enforcing power limits via current control to prevent overheating and ensure operational stability.

Since speed and power are directly correlated, electric scooters with a top speed of just 20–25 km/h (12–15.5 mph) often fall short of outdoor commuters’ daily needs, as their limited motor power makes it difficult to reach higher speeds or climb steep hills effectively — for these users, a dual-motor scooter with at least 6000W, such as the HWWH S3, is typically required to meet everyday demands.

What are the legal speed limits for electric scooters in different countries or regions?

Region Legal Source Scooter Maximum Speed Limit
Germany eKFV (implemented June 2019) 20 km/h (12.4 mph)
France EU Transport Regulations 25 km/h (15.5 mph)
Belgium, Spain, etc. EU Unified Requirements 25 km/h (15.5 mph)
California (USA) California Vehicle Code (CVC §22411) 15 mph (~24 km/h)

European Union (EU)

According to the European Commission’s summary, many EU countries have generally implemented maximum speed limits for electric scooters:

  • France: Maximum speed on roads is 25 km/h (15.5 mph).
  • Germany: Allowed on public roads with a maximum speed of 20 km/h (12.4 mph), motor power ≤ 500 W, and requires two sets of brakes and insurance.
  • Italy: Maximum speed on general roads is 25 km/h (15.5 mph), reduced to 6 km/h (3.7 mph) in pedestrian areas; from December 2024, the limit will be set at 20 km/h (12.4 mph).
  • Spain and Belgium: Nationwide limit of 25 km/h (15.5 mph).

The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) recommends a unified limit of 20 km/h (12.4 mph), with factory-set speed limits that cannot be altered.

United Kingdom (UK)

The maximum speed is set at 15.5 mph (≈ 25 km/h).

Canada (Example: Ontario)

Maximum speed 24 km/h (15 mph)

United States (Example: California)

Electric scooters (Motorized Scooters) are defined as two-wheeled vehicles with a maximum speed of 15 mph (≈ 24 km/h), allowed to use bike lanes where sidewalks are prohibited.
